My work is situated in the blurred space between the abstract and the figurative. Suggesting the sense of a location, my paintings are an invitation to step into imagined spaces. Inspired by Kandinsky and Richter, the work variously gestures towards horizons, skies, tundra and waters allowing, I hope, the viewer to ascribe weights and emphasis.
I work rapidly with acrylics on canvas, playing with the malleability of the medium from the texture of impasto to the mercurial character of free-flowing pigment. I don’t set out with a sharp plan, instead follow where the work takes me through an exploration of colour and form. I feel that there is a singular image behind my work which I reveal from different perspectives with each painting. I find myself drawn towards the notion of horizon and a connection to the awe of being lost in a landscape of scale.
